GECO 3

The requirements for the GECO system are unique in two respects. First, GECO is a distributed system with point-of-sale systems at GSA stores worldwide. Hence the architecture needs to be developed such that each location can work during wide-area network outages. Second, GECO currently utilizes an end-of-life module - RMS - that is functionally-mature and is end-of-life. This too has architectural impacts plus increases the time pressure on the overall effort.

Introduction

One of GSA's responsibility is to manage retail stores for government use across the US. Outside GSA manages retail stores in Alaska and Hawaii, as well as in Japan, South Korea, and Guam. In the US, GSA manages retail stores for all military services ranging from Curtis Bay, MD, to Southern California, and many states in between. The GSA Enhanced Check-out (GECO) Application has been developed to provide point-of-sale operations to these stores.

The Solution Architecture was developed to support GECO 3's independent of other GSS systems (such as OMS) and its distributed world-wide nature and interacts with the balance of GSA via systems interfaces.
