Cloud Plays

GSA offers a portfolio of cloud services and plays to support the products and services. A Play is an endorsed, referenceable, and consumable source of guidance providing a path for implementing a specific solution. Each Play provides the process to implement various FAS Cloud Services. The following levels serve to indicate the maturity and availability of each service listed.

Cloud Play: Multi-tenant Container-as-a-Service (MCaaS)

MCaaS is a FAS cloud service providing a set of multiple cloud capabilities utilizing a common infrastructure. The driving force and strategy behind MCaas is to provide a mature and reliable managed service to tenant customers, which will allow them to laser focus on developing first class application systems for their user-base while leaving infrastructure, management, and security concerns to FCS MCaaS. In addition, the FAS Cloud Services (FCS) MCaaS Team provides tenant support throughout the Cloud Journey - every step of the way.

Cloud Play: Leveraging DevSecOps in the FCS Ecosystem

DevSecOps (short for development, security, and operations) is a model that tightly integrates the activities of development, security, and operations teams to increase GSA’s ability to deliver applications and services faster than traditional approaches where each of these lifecycle phases are siloed. This model promotes cross-functional support across the product lifecycle by combining the skillsets relating to development, test, security, and operations.

Cloud Play: Amazon S3 Virus Scanning Component

BucketAV - S3 Virus Scanning Components - This service gives FCS tenants and administrators the ability to scan objects stored in S3 against industry malware definitions and automatically quarantine malicious files in S3 outside tenant control. S3 Virus Scanning Component also reports back on the kinds of files and frequency of malware in the uploaded data.

Disclaimer: This particular component has not been widely adopted across the FCS ecosystem. However, specific tenants have utilized this design pattern in the past. As the demand increases, FCS will work to promote this to a service for wider adoption. The information presented here is for evaluation and informational purposes.

Cloud Play: Virtual Desktop Integration (VDI) via the FAS Toolset/Tool Bench for Enhanced Developer Productivity

Desktop virtualization is a software technology that separates the desktop environment from the physical client device that is used to access it. In the case of GSA, the Virtual Desktop Interface (VDI) pairs the benefits of virtual desktop infrastructure with single image management to deliver a virtual desktop solution. VDI is available for logon via web browser on Windows, also from a Mac or iPhone or Android Mobile Device.

Cloud Play: Use the Simple Storage Service (S3) Portal to Access S3 Buckets for your applications

The S3 Portal is a browser application for accessing AWS S3 storage used by FAS applications. It provides operations to:

Through FCS S3 Portal, tenants can access AWS S3 buckets for their applications through an approved interface.

Cloud Play: Everything But the App (EBTA)

The FAS Cloud Services (FCS) is a platform for secure hosting of GSA internal and external agency applications on a virtual private AWS cloud. It enables application teams to achieve ‘push-button deployment’ through DevOps principles, automation, and integration of common services. FCS provides tailored AWS cloud infrastructure along with a set of tools and procedures for deploying code changes

For new, ‘cloud-native’ applications, the platform provides fully integrated, automated application stacks with orchestration tools to enable ‘push-button deployment’. This is referred to as FCS ‘EBTA’.

Cloud Play: Virtual Private Cloud as a Service (VPCaaS)

VPCaaS (VPC as a Service) provides FCS Tenants with a secure AWS cloud environment with a VPC connected to the CSR VPN network. VPCaaS is a technology environment for apps, services, or automated processes. It provides autonomy for the tenant through allowing it to be self-managed by the tenant and independent from FCS. The Tenant is responsible for app development, operations, architecture and security including obtaining the ATO.

Cloud Play: Terminal access as a Service (TaaS) - Centralized and Secure Access Using Jump Boxes

Terminal access as a Service (TaaS) is a service that provides Application owners the ability to access their servers securely via a Jump Box. The service is primarily designed to give Tenants the ability to connect to Platform components that leverage remote management capabilities which require software to perform these duties.

Cloud Play: Headless Drupal

The Headless Drupal play provides developers an example rich guide to use the Drupal platform as Content as a Service. Drupal serves as the back-end content management system with decoupled front-end of choice for content display.
